Ways to preserve and transfer self-devotion and martyrdom culture to next generation

Definition of value

Literally, value means price, worth, worthiness and seemliness. In every field of the society, economy, culture, religion, law, ethics, etc. value has a special meaning. Generally, Islamic values mean what is suitable and useful from the viewpoint of the sacred religion of Islam, although, sometimes, Islamic values have a special meaning, that is, those values whose properness and preciousness in ethics is recognized by Islam, so, Islamic values as one of the spiritual and cultural elements of the Sacred Defense mean the most significant moral values owned by the warriors of the Sacred Defense.

Values are regarded as one of the most important elements of a culture, since, they have roots in the beliefs of a nation and are effective in various arenas. The appearance and emergence of these values will be brighter and more considerable in the crucial events such as in the time of defending the motherland.

The values which were manifested in the epic of the Sacred Defense and were one of the effective factors in gaining victory against enemies had roots in the pure Islamic culture and religious beliefs of the warriors of Islam. Based on the Quranic teachings, they made their relationship with Allah closer. Such a relationship creating based on the remembrance of God, prayer, closeness to the holy Quran, sincerity and trust in Allah gave them peace and divine assistance and victory.

The warriors of Islam had learned from the holy Quran to love each other and show brotherhood and unanimity, and in this way, the mutual relationship between commanders and soldiers were organized and its wonderful results were displayed in the most difficult situation of war. Such a deep love led to self-devotion and self-sacrifice. They had also learned from the holy Quran to be stable and proud in face of enemies. In order to fulfill this goal, they displayed patience and resistance beautifully and the brightness of Islamic values was reflected in the epic of the Sacred Defense.

       Meaning of self-devotion and martyrdom

Literally, martyr means evidence, and generally, martyr is someone who is killed in the path of God. According to hadiths, martyrdom is the best death and the drop of martyr’s blood is the best drops before Allah. Martyrdom makes sins be forgiven by Allah. Martyrs are the first ones who enter the paradise and everyone envies their position. Martyrdom means to die in order to reach the source of light and seek closeness to the Creator. Martyrdom is to be killed for the sake of a holy goal and martyr chooses this kind of death consciously.

The late Imam Khomeini (RA) says: “The red death is infinitely better than the black life and today, we wait for martyrdom, so that, tomorrow, our children will be proud in face of the global blasphemy”.

From the viewpoint of Islam, martyrdom for the sake of Allah has been so significant and beautiful that the divine prophets and infallible Imams including Hazret Ali (AS) and his children like Imam Hossein (AS), Imam Jafar Sadeq (AS), etc. wished martyrdom in the path of Allah.

Such a wish is apparent in the words and deeds of the infallible Imams (AS). We should consider this main point that if martyrdom occurred once in history, and only one martyr existed in history, the significance of martyrdom would be beyond the significance of all phenomena in history again.

The virtues and features of Imam Hossein (AS) and Ashura culture is a perfect example which completely describes the true face and unforgettable lesson of honor, self-devotion, bravery, courage, freedom-seeking, love, justice-seeking, patience, uprising for the sake of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, martyrdom-seeking, jihad in the path of right and truth, theism, worshipping, and ideal life of humanity to all freedom-seeking humans.

Relationship between moral values and religious beliefs

Moral values approved by the religion of Islam are based on the Islamic ideology and religious beliefs. In the school of Islam, there is no moral value minus belief and faith in the Resurrection Day. So, professor Motahari believes that human and moral honor is not formed unless in the theistic school and it is not explainable in any other school. Regarding the relationship between the moral values and faith, he says: “munificence, honor, piety, chastity, honesty, and all issues named as the moral virtues and all people and nations respect them are based on the principle of faith, since, all of them disagree with materialism and a kind of material deprivation should be tolerated in order to be bound to each of these virtues. Man should have a reason to be satisfied with a deprivation, and it is possible when he/she has perceived the value of spirituality and has tasted its sweetness”.

Therefore, the Islamic ideology and religious beliefs direct deeds of man towards the way through which he/she can reach the eternal perfection and prosperity; it is the perfection and prosperity which can be achieved just via seeking closeness to Allah.

Necessity of preserving values of Sacred Defense

How we think about history and have knowledge of it will clear our demands. Such thought either enlighten us or make us go astray and ignore realities.

The range of effectiveness of the culture and spirituality of our war front extended when it became known among the other Islamic society especially in Lebanon, Afghanistan and other regional countries. The deep influence of the Sacred Defense is undeniable in people’s life and religious beliefs of our strong nation. The importance of this issue becomes clearer when we see the supreme leader of the Islamic revolution puts emphasis on this issue in his great directives: “this culture should be considered and stabilized in all cultural, social and economic planning and policies. So, we should oppose the harms facing the culture of the Sacred Defense, namely, indolence and materialism”.

Necessity of institutionalizing values among young generation

Intellectual substructures of every society have roots in the culture and culture has a direct relationship with the substructures of the society. So, in order to change the government ruling a society, first, its culture should be changed and at this period of time, the enemies of the religion and the holy Quran and the hegemonistic powers inside and outside the country have put the cultural onslaughts on their agenda with the aim of changing the government.

Since, the history of nations is a window to their national identity, everyone becomes familiar with history and symbols, thoughts and religions during his/her education. In light of values, humans change and achieve mental, personal and social stability due to the culture and philosophy in which they believe and form their national identity. In this regard, the main means to transfer and preserve religious beliefs of the society and preserve the history and past heritages is education after family and it is obvious that education system is the most vital institution which can provide the individual and social prosperity as well as preserving and promoting culture. Considering this vital role of education, it becomes clear why educational centers as the first target are brutally exposed to the cultural onslaughts.

Institutionalizing values in the society needs planning and all cultural organizations in the society especially education system are responsible for this main issue and key and basic works should be done in this regard. So, the essential measures should be taken to introduce the correct models to the young generation, so that, they can meet the needs in accordance with the values of the Islamic revolution.

The magnificent history of the Islamic republic system is full of self-devotions and self-sacrificing of huge number of teachers who taught lesson of bravery, valor and defense of the religion to their students and they defended the sacred Islamic system devotedly and their pure blood proves this claim. Today too, teachers are responsible for guiding the generation who are the target of the enemies’ poisoned cultural onslaughts.

Having belief in the religion, opposing hegemony, having love for the motherland, having a purposeful life and making endeavors to develop the country are the precious assets of our dear youths and they are the result of endless endeavors of devoted and sympathetic teachers and we should hail such great endeavors.

Education system as the hugest cultural and educational institution of the country has mission to train the next generation. The wise teachers with their great intellectual and cultural capability as the producers of thought and wisdom should try to promote the level of knowledge and culture of the society by developing and deepening the values of the Islamic revolution, and following the religious rituals and healthy political attitudes. Schools as the frontline of education and training front are the center to develop the wisdom borders.

The most basic need of the society is to have healthy, capable and righteous people and schools are responsible for training such people. The mission of prophets has been to purify, teach and train humans and at the present time, teachers have such a duty and the destiny of many people is shaped in schools. Doing a planning for training a generation is counted as a very significant work.

Today generation in fact enjoys the endeavors of the generation who created and continued the revolution. Iran is a young country and today, we have talented and active youths full of energy and it is a huge gift and asset provided this generation is built based on a correct identity. The first thing which should be awarded to this generation by education system is hope and enthusiasm for the future and chance to make use of the opportunities which the Islamic revolution has given to people especially the young generation. Training means guidance and it is to give the spirit of moral discipline to the young generation. And surely, doing a planning for training a generation is a very important work.

Now that the enemies of Islam and the Islamic revolution feel desperate abut their all plots, they suppose that the only way to oppose this magnificent Islamic revolution is to fight against the culture and beliefs of people and they have focused their most attention and onslaught on the young generation, the future makers of the Islamic society.

Due to their continuous and active attendance in the years of the Sacred Defense, teachers and cultural officials as the standard-bearers of education have had a historical and unforgettable interaction which shows the insight, love and fondness of this elite group for the religion of Islam. Now, as the war front has changed, we should take steps in the cultural arena and by obeying the supreme leader of the Islamic revolution and following the path of the late Imam Khomeini (RA), we should continue the path of martyrs and by launching a new movement and seeking help from the holy Quran and itrat (the kindred of the great Prophet of Islam (S)) and gaining a perfect knowledge of enemies, we should defend the ideals of the Islamic culture.

The significance and role of teachers in societies is so high that the Divine prophets introduce themselves as a teacher, and on the other hand, it is seen that history is made by teachers. In the Islamic teachings and from the viewpoint of the leaders of Islam, a teacher is great and worthy of appreciation when he/she guides and invites his/her students to gain Islamic values and avoid anti-values. Imam Khomeini (RA) says: “When a teacher is a kind of teacher who invites you to righteous deeds, Islam, good morality, human values and those values which are precious before God, he/she will direct children from darkens towards light and if so, it is the job of the divine prophets as the divine prophets guided men from darkness towards light.
