Mosques’ role in fulfilling motto “The Year of Political and Economic Valor”

One of the ways and methods of guiding the society towards a comprehensive and complete growth in all arenas and dimensions of a prosperous life in an Islamic society is to present a perfect plan to all levels and groups of the society.

In this regard, various plans and programs are presented according to the needs and opportunities in order to achieve the desired goals; one of the most influential programs lasting for more than one decade in the country has been to coin a slogan which should be short and brief as well as being comprehensive having such an ability to convey the message in the best possible way. As well as having the essential comprehensiveness, such name, words and sentences should have the capacity of doing planning, organizing and utilizing all existing potentials and achieving the targeted goal.

Concurrent with the commencement of the Iranian New Year, the supreme leader of the Islamic revolution names that year and it is a good and wise tradition and this message as a wise and appropriate final word should be clarified to all groups and levels of the Islamic society and be applied and implemented across the society.

The year 1392 has been named “The Year of Political and Economic Valor”; considering the current situation of our country and the main upcoming events, such titles are very essential and sign of a wise decision.

Political valor: holding two main elections in the current Iranian calendar year 1392 will display the symbol of religious democracy once again to the world; the 11th presidential election and the Islamic Councils election will be held earlier this year and considering the sensitivity of electing a president who can lead the Islamic society, the very issue becomes very important. Electing the most appropriate person is a concern felt in every election and due to the high position of the president in the Islamic system, the enemies of the Islamic system have entered the stage and are to create problems in this regard via presenting purposeful programs and one-sided analyses. For this reason, election is of high significance for both the Islamic system and the enemies of the Islamic system and the only thing which can discourage enemies and encourage the friends of the Islamic system is to create another epic and display a huge popular turnout in the election, so such insightful and huge participation is in fact named a great valor and it is worth noting that holding the upcoming election magnificently will convey many messages to the enemies.

Economic valor: one of the most important aims of the global hegemony behind the frequent and comprehensive sanctions imposed on the Iranian nation is to place people under the intensified pressure and create internal seditions in order to make the officials of the Islamic system give up. What has stopped enemies from achieving their evil aims is the wise decisions and tact of the officials, so surely, in the current Iranian calendar year, enemies are to intensify and increase the pressures and sanctions, although political issues are placed beyond the economic goals and sanctions and the final and evil goal of the global hegemony is to destroy the Islamic system. What is inferred from the existing situation and the plots of the West is to put our country under the economic and political pressures simultaneously, therefore, it is essential to vigilantly oppose them in order to foil their plots and create an epic in these two domains.

In order to fulfill this motto, it is essential to prepare the grounds in all domains especially in the hardware and software domains and all existing facilities and equipments should be employed and all organizations, institutions, and executive organizations have to enter the stage and utilize their capabilities and capacities and take practical steps to fulfill the directives of the supreme leader of the Islamic revolution.

One of the very rich capacities and golden opportunities to fulfill the motto of the year is to make use of mosques considering their bright background and great position since the beginning years of Islam until now. Therefore, mosques should be specially utilized to fulfill this main issue and be considered while doing every planning and making every decision.

By considering various functions of mosques since the beginning years of Islam up to now, we achieve the results and findings that show the undeniable and pivotal role of mosques in all religious, educational, political, cultural, economic, military and judiciary domains and the pivotal role of mosques in guiding the Islamic society is completely obvious. In this article, we are to clarify and analyze the role of mosques in fulfilling the motto of the year in the economic and political domains.

Political function:

If we take a close look at the religious teachings presented in the manner and tradition of our religious leaders, we will perceive that the religious issues have been in interaction with the political issues and the Islamic leadership and government has a close relationship with each other. In this regard, mosques have been always a ground for developing the participation of Muslims in the political and religious issues. For this reason, two words of religion and politics form a single category in the holy religion of Islam. In other words, religion and politics form an identical element manifesting parallel and they are never separable.

The motto “our politics is the very our religion” is counted a strategic slogans of the Islamic system and has been clarified by the late Imam Khomeini (RA), the great founder of the Islamic revolution.

Among various functions of mosques, we can mention that its political function is the most important one. In the Islamic government, there is no separation and distance between the officials and people and Muslims can supervise the path and directions of the government and the affairs of the society and announce their view and stance on the political issues and help the government via presenting plans, programs and constructive suggestions. After establishing the modern Islamic system in Medina and in order to make Muslims participate in the issues of the government and inform them about the political goals of Islam, the great Prophet of Islam (S) chose mosques which were a public center for gathering of Muslims to implement the religious rituals as the base of the government and the political institution of Islam. We should remind that mosques were active in the political domains in the next periods too. For this reason, the political role of mosques was of high importance and they were counted as a political institution among Muslims and the main result of adopting such approach towards mosques is that mosques prepare the grounds for creating many deep changes and reform movements in the Islamic societies.

Regarding the prominent role of mosques in culture, economy, politics and unity among Muslims, Marcel Boisard in his book “l' humaisme de l' Islam” in the section of “Islam in today’s world” mentions: mosques is a vital factor in keeping the unity and solidarity among Muslims throughout the world, especially in the contemporary era that Muslims show the same enthusiasm and fervent as the beginning years of Islam and mosques have turned into the centers to train clergies and the base of the Muslims’ movements and uprisings against oppressors. Holding Friday prayers is a way to gather Muslims in a public holiday, propose the main social issues, discuss the welfare shortcomings and make decisions about the political issues and in the recent years and in the freed Muslims countries which move towards economic growth and political domination, it has been very influential. On the various occasions such as religious feasts, birth anniversary of infallible Imams (AS), Ashura, etc. Muslims attend mosques and such attendance strengthens the communication and interaction among Muslims and provides a good opportunity to enlighten and clarify the public opinions.

In this regard, by setting the history of beginning years of Islam as the model and paying attention to the decisive role of mosques in the government of the great Prophet of Islam (S) and Hazret Ali (AS), the late Imam Khomeini (RA) as the founder of this huge Islamic movement succeeded to revive the political function of mosques in the contemporary history, in such a way that the victory of the Islamic revolution of Iran revolving around the pivot of mosques challenged the political structure of the international system and presented a new plan in the domain of political ideology. According to him, the role of mosques in the political and social changes is of high importance and the Islamic societies’ inattention to the political influence of mosques is the greatest problem of Muslims in the contemporary era. The problems, difficulties and all troubles of the Islamic societies especially in the recent two centuries arise from this fact just the religious dimension of mosques have been considered and the result is that the hegemonistic powers have established their dominance over the Islamic countries and plundered the resources of the world of Islam.

Considering this political and religious stance of the late Imam Khomeini (RA), he warned people that holding congregational prayers at mosques should not have just religious aims, but also the political aspect of praying should be considered too, since it has played a very significant role in guiding people towards the political activities. The late Imam Khomeini (AR) asked people to consider and analyze the current issues at mosques and shout to oppose the enemies’ plots against their country. Also, in order to fight against the Shah regime, the late Imam Khomeini (RA) challenged the government and its plans via adopting the negative campaign. By closing mosques in the holy month of Ramadan throughout the country, he tried to direct the public opinion against the Shah regime by stopping the activities of mosques.

Regarding the political function of mosques, we should not ignore the effective role of holding congregational prayers as a spiritual gathering which is formed several times in a day. As a final analysis, we can say that holding the congregational prayers is a good opportunity to open the way of goodness and piety to Muslims. Illuminating the public opinion and creating solidarity and unity among Muslims based on the divine orders in various political-social domains is the greatest factor in guiding people to guard the health of the society and prevent them from committing crimes and sins. As at the beginning of his prophetic mission, the great Prophet of Islam (S) held the congregational prayers at Masjidul Haram before the disbelievers’ eyes. Therefore, the infallible Imams (AS) didn’t have just the religious attitude towards mosques, and creating unity among Muslims is one of the influential political and social results of holding congregational prayers and Ahl al-Beyt (AS) put emphasis on the Shiites’ participation in the congregational prayers held by Sunnis.

Since the beginning years of Islam until now, one of the most significant manifestations of the political function of mosques which has been also counted as a very good capacity of mosques is to hold election at mosques; since election an mosques have been tied together since the past time up to now. Even at the beginning years of Islam, Muslims swore allegiance to commanders and caliphs at mosques and in this regard, mosques succeeded to prove this main fact that they have the capability and capacity to direct the public opinions towards creating a healthy competitive atmosphere and can guarantee the public health of the election due to the spiritual morale of the custodians and managers of mosques.

In this regard, we should not ignore the crucial and prominent role of the congregational prayer leaders of mosques, Ulema and clergies in holding a fervent election and encouraging people to greatly participate in the election and electing the most righteous and experienced candidates.

As it was mentioned, the role of mosques in the political issues is of high importance; but what is significant at the moment is to review the political roles of mosques and improve them in accordance with the current situation. Mosques should become active in the field of the political assemblies and follow the defined plans and programs.

Economic function:

Today, the economic issues is one of the most significant subjects in societies and for this reason, the economic issues are counted as the most important issues to governments and people and is effective in the political, cultural and military issues of countries. Islam is a perfect religion which pays attention to all aspects of human life and has guided the society’s economic life very well. Mosques are one of the religious institutions which have the economic aspects too.

Although, we should consider that the economic function of mosques is indirect and is fulfilled more via giving sermon and advice, stating the trade laws and doing the economic works at mosques.

By strengthening the faith and religiousness of people and considering the spiritual atmosphere prevailing in mosques, mosques train prayers and worshippers based on an Islamic method and in the result, by paying Khums and Zakat, they help the poor Muslims. Charity and alms is one of the Islamic values; the gathering of Muslims at mosques promotes the spirit of cooperation and collaboration and the advices of religious preachers at mosques accelerate the processes for eliminating poverty from the society.
